Nursing Home Abuse

Nursing home abuse is becoming one of the greatest challenges that we must face. At one point or another nursing home abuse will probably affect all of us. Whether it may be a friend, family member, or even yourself, nursing home abuse is becoming far too prevalent in an industry that is supposed to care for our loved ones.

What is Nursing Home Abuse?

Abuse can take many forms – from emotional and financial abuse and neglect to physical assault. Some of our most vulnerable elders are the most susceptible to abuse, including those with dementia or disabilities. No matter what form it takes, nursing home abuse is illegal and needs to be stopped.

Incidents of nursing home abuse are rarely reported to the proper authorities. Residents may be reluctant to complain for fear of retaliation or embarrassment, and family and friends of the victim might be unaware of the common signs of abuse.

Watch Out For These Warning Signs:
Physical Abuse
  • Frequent injuries such as bruises, cuts, black eyes or burns.
  • Frequent complaints of pain without obvious injury.
  • Passive, withdrawn, or emotionless behavior.
  • Lack of reaction to pain.
  • Reports of physical abuse.
Neglect
  • Obvious malnutrition (unexplained weight loss) and dehydration.
  • Lack of personal cleanliness.
  • Habitually dressed in torn or dirty clothes.
  • Constantly hungry.
  • In need of medical/dental care.
  • Left unattended for long periods of time.
  • Reports of neglect.
