The Sulzer hip replacement, manufactured by Sulzer Orthopedics, is an artificial joint that contains Inter-Op acetabular shells used to replace the natural hip in patients whose hips could no longer function normally. The inter-op acetabular shell is a socket-like component of a hip replacement system. It was designed to bond with the natural bone of the pelvis and receive a ball-like device that is inserted into the thigh bone (femur).
On December 8, 2000, Sulzer Orthopedics recalled its Inter-Op acetabular shell for hip implants due to a manufacturing defect that prevented some of these shells from bonding with the bone. Approximately 25,000 products and 17,500 hip implants already in patients are subject to the recall. As of March 2001, there have been 573 documented revision surgeries. At the end of March 2001, the number climbed to 748.
Symptoms include pain in your inner thigh or groin, pain when arising from a seated position or pain with standing and weight bearing, if you experience any of these symptoms please call your surgeon. You should ask your surgeon for the specific lot number of your hip replacement, in order to determine if the hip shell you received is covered by the recall.
Regardless of whether you currently have a defective Inter-Op shell, have received revision surgery, or are a loved one of someone affected by the Sulzer prosthetic, you may be entitled to benefits of a class action settlement, or you may choose to pursue a legal remedy independently.
